Adams welcomes election results

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP has welcomed the two by-election results today in Erne West and Newtownabbey.

In Erne West the Sinn Fein vote significantly increased by over 60% allowing Stephen Hugget to take the seat on the first count.

In Newtownabbey, in our fist ever electoral contest in that area, Roisin McGurk took 1063 votes. In normal council elections this would amount to a quota and a half. Sinn Fein is now well placed to win one seat and possibly two in next years local council elections in that area.

Mr. Adams said:

``This is a commendable result. I want to thank our candidates and our election teams for the hard work they put into these by-elections. When taken with the other two recent by-elections in Antrim and Omagh which Sinn Fein won convincingly, it is clear that more and more people are turning to Sinn Fein to represent their views.

``Our proven track record in the peace process, our social, economic and cultural policies, which reflect the real needs of people, and our hard working and effective representation, are persuading people in increasing numbers to vote Sinn Fein.''ENDS
