Sinn Fein Nominate Maskey for Mayoral Election
Sinn Fein councillors in Belfast last night formally nominated Alex Maskey as the party's candidate for Mayor. Commenting Sinn Fein Upper Falls Councillor Michael Browne said:
``Central to the debate around the mayoralty is the preparedness or otherwise of members of the council to recognise and respect the rights of Sinn Fein voters.
``I would remind all members of the council that by voting for the Good Friday Agreement an overwhelming majority expressed a desire for inclusivity and equality. Councillor in Belfast must decide whether they are prepared to embrace these principles or not. By supporting the election of a Sinn Fein nominee for Mayor they can demonstrate clearly that they are prepared to accept the type of change which will herald a new era of fair play and equality in this city.
``In the event of Alex Maskey not being elected to the position of Mayor Sinn Fein will attempt to assert the right of the party to civic leadership by contesting the election for Deputy Mayor.''ENDS
