Sligo County Council calls for reinstatement of Good Friday Agreement institutions

Sligo County Council has unanimously called on the British Government to immediately reinstate the Good Friday Agreement institutions.

The call came after cross-party support for a motion tabled by the Deputy Mayor of Sligo, Alderman Seán MacManus of Sinn Fein. The motion read:

``Sligo County Council expresses its opposition to the actions of the British Government in suspending the institutions of the Good Friday Agreement. Recognising that this unilateral action is a clear breach of an international agreement, this council calls for the immediate reinstatement of the institutions in line with Irish Government policy.''

Alderman MacManus has appealed to local authorities throughout Ireland to pass similar motions. He said:

``Two million Irish people voted for the Good Friday Agreement institutions - one man, Peter Mandelson, took them away. This cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.''
