Inquiry in Finucane Killing Required
Sinn Fein Assembly member Gerry Kelly has called for a fully independent inquiry into the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane. His call comes in light of the reports that six files have been sent by the Stevens team to the DPP.
Mr Kelly said:
``The fact that over ten years later the Stevens team has sent six files to the DPP raises many questions about the circumstances surrounding Pat Finucane's murder and the subsequent RUC investigation. We were told for many years that the RUC were investigating the murder of Pat Finucane, yet nobody was ever charged.
``Within a matter of months the Stevens team have charged an RUC informer with the killing and we are now told that files on another six people have been passed to the DPP. It is clear that the RUC failed to pursue the killers of Pat Finucane.
``A fully independent inquiry is required to investigate the collusion between the RUC and a loyalist death squad in the lead up to, and in the aftermath of, the murder of Pat Finucane. The fact that the Stevens team have charged one man and sent files on another six to the DPP show clearly that the RUC were never interested in investigating the killing of Pat Finucane. They colluded in the murder of Pat Finucane and then sought to cover up this by failing to investigate the case.''
