Fusco extradition ``disgraceful'' - Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has described the decision to proceed with the extradition of Angelo Fusco as ``disgraceful''. Deputy Ó Caoláin urged the immediate intervention of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, John O'Donoghue, to order the release of the prisoner.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

``The decision to proceed with the extradition of Angelo Fusco is disgraceful. The Government and the gardai have major questions to answer as to why this extradition is going ahead at this time. The State's pursuit of Angelo Fusco for extradition in relation to political offences in the Six Counties runs completely contrary to the commitment in the Good Friday Agreement to the release of political prisoners.

``Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, political extradition caused major political controversy and saw the authorities in this State trample on the rights of citizens to secure extradition at Britain's behest. We had a right to expect that these days were over.

``The extradition of Angelo Fusco is totally wrong. I call on the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to intervene immediately and to order Angelo Fusco's release.'' ENDS
