Political Hostages
(Saturday - 11.10/11.50)
- Support the motion Oppose the motion
We ask this Ard Fheis to support this motion calling for the immediate
release of the five Irish political prisoners held in England who have
served 23 years. We abhor the treatment of these prisoners at the hands of
the British government. Far from contemplating their release, the British
government has only recently imposed ``whole life tariffs'' upon these men
which effectively means that they should die in jail. The irish government
should desist from the application of draconian British tariffs imposed on
Irish prisoners arrested in England and subsequently repatriated.
Otherwise such draconian sentences will continue to be enforced on
republican prisoners when repatriated to Portlaoise.
The five longest serving prisoners of the conflict held in England have
repeatedly applied for repatriation to jails nearer their families.
However despite requests from political and legal representatives the
British government has doggedly resisted movement on this issue. We demand
the immediate repatriation and subsequent release of these prisoners and
call for pressure to be applied from all concerned to effectuate this.
Pending this we demand that all Irish republican prisoners held in England
should be given parole, compassionate and otherwise and that the use of
Special Secure Units should cease.
